School Superintendent Andy Irvin said the roofs at all five schools are more than 30 years old and need to be replaced. He says there was already one flood at the high school this summer.
Staff came in one morning this summer to dropped ceiling tiles and a bathroom with water damage due to flooding, school officials told Fios1News.
If approved by Carmel residents, the money will be used for major upgrades that Irvin said are urgently needed to keep the schools fully operational. Voters defeated school bond proposals last year, citing concerns over the cost.
The $25.5 million bond proposal includes:
- $12 million to replace roofs.
- $11.7 million for a new facility to house the district's school buses.
- $822,095 for changes required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- $595,000 to renovate the middle school library.
School officials estimate that state aide will cover about $21 million of the $25.5 million in projects.
Local taxpayers would be responsible for the balance of the project and about $10 million in interest.
School officials said the projects would raise property taxes by about $6 annually for a home assessed at $350,000.
